Weekly classes – NOW RUNNING

The next eight-week evening class will start on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, and run until Wednesday, March 13. Please get in touch if you’d like to be included on the waiting list.

Wednesdays, 6pm – 9pm.

Out of the Blue Abbeymount, 2 Easter Road, Edinburgh EH7 5AN

Learn new mosaic skills and refine your existing ones with this eight-week course which will give you the flexibility and skills to create a range of indoor and outdoor mosaic projects from plaques to pots, mirrors to mandalas.

The course is aimed at people with no experience of mosaic making as well as those who want to expand their skills. New participants will start by learning cutting, laying and sticking techniques before making their own mosaic using the direct method on a 25cm x 25cm wooden board.  Students will be using ceramic and vitreous glass tiles with the option of either following their own designs or working with pre-prepared patterns and by the end of the course they will have all the skills needed for further projects including fixing and grouting.

Mosaic improvers will begin by learning about the range of different methods and their applications before deciding on their own project. The possibilities are endless – a mosaic table top, an outdoor urn, a mirror frame or just a more ambitious mosaic design on board. Individual guidance and help will be offered as well as all the tools and materials needed to complete your project.

Both beginners and improvers who complete their main project will have the opportunity to explore a different technique in the final two classes. The options include experimenting with the tile adhesive method using found and recycled objects such as shells, pebbles and broken pottery or using the indirect method to make a paving stone.

No previous experience necessary. Maximum class size: 5.

Cost: £220.

Weekend workshop in Classic Mosaics

Saturday and Sunday March 30 and 31, 2019

10:30 – 5pm both days

Out of the Blue Abbeymount, 2 Easter Road, Edinburgh EH7 5AN

What to expect: This weekend workshop in Classic Mosaic is aimed at those who already have some experience in mosaics and would like to expand their skills and understanding of this ancient art. The weekend will start with a short overview of the history of mosaics and the methods that we still use today which have scarcely changed from Roman times. We will study the ‘rules’ of ancient mosaic making as well as the commonly used laying techniques, or andamento, before participants start working on their own projects. The aim is for each participant to make a 25cm x 25cm panel, either choosing their own Roman design or selecting from a number of pre-prepared templates. The method used will be the direct method on Jackoboard suitable for indoor or outdoor hanging and the material will be Winckelmans unglazed ceramic.

Maximum class size: 5

Cost: £160

What’s included: Tools and equipment, a wide selection of colours from the Winckelmans unglazed ceramic range, bases, adhesives, course notes and teas/coffees/biscuits.

What to bring: An apron or big shirt, design ideas, a shallow box to take your work home and a packed lunch. Alternatively, there are a range of good cafes very close by with sandwiches and salad options.

Please note: Due to studio rental costs, a minimum number of three people is required to run the course. In the event that the course is cancelled or postponed, you will receive a full refund.

Payment by bank transfer or cheque must be in full at least one week before the workshop begins and is non-refundable if you are unable to attend unless I am able to fill your place. Alternatively, you can carry over your payment and attend the next available workshop.
