This introduction weekend to lino cut and mosaics is an informal, friendly and supportive workshop designed to give you all the essential skills to work independently in both disciplines.

Introduction to lino cut and mosaics

Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios, 2 Easter Road, Edinburgh EH7 5AN

If you love the bold lines of lino printing, then you are probably equally drawn to mosaics. This workshop aims to help you see the crossover between different disciplines and how the skills from one practice translate into another.

A successful lino-cut print is all about line, contrast and clear designs. Interestingly, the same is true for an effective mosaic.

This unusual two-in-one weekend workshop combines an introduction to lino-cut with an introduction to mosaics and will leave you with an understanding of techniques, tools, materials and the all-important balance of light and dark which apply to both.

On day one you will be introduced to lino cut; how to use the tools, different types of mark making, blocks, ink and paper options.

On the second day, what you have learnt about contrast and tone will feed into your creation of a mosaic. Here, we will learn about cutting and placing your tesserae and we will aim to grout your mosaic at the end of the session.

Suitable for beginners and improvers and for those who want to understand the more about the process inherent in making successful designs in mosaic and lino.

You will create your own lino cut block and see the process from start to finish, including printing several copies of your design. You will take the block and prints home with you.

You will make a small mosaic plaque and have time to get familiar with the tools and cutting techniques so that you can continue your new skill at home.

What’s included: Use of tools and equipment. Inks, lino blocks and paper on day one. Ceramic and vitreous glass tiles, bases, adhesives and course notes on day two. Tea, coffee and wrapped biscuits are available throughout.

What to bring: An apron or big shirt – both print making and mosaics are messy. You will also need a shallow box, like a pizza box,  to take your mosaic home.

Cancellation policy: If you cancel up to two weeks before the workshop then you will receive a full refund. Otherwise, we will try to fill your place before the class. If we manage to do so then you would be refunded and if not, then there would be no refund.
If we need to cancel due to unforeseen circumstances, then we would aim to give you as much notice as possible. Unfortunately, however, we would not be able to accept liability for your travel or accommodation costs so it would be a good idea to take out travel insurance to cover these expenses in the event of a cancellation. In the event of us needing to cancel, we would aim to reschedule the class or provide you with a full refund.
