My mosaic practice is grounded in the traditional craft of mosaic making. It is informed by my classical training in Greece where I studied historical techniques and materials.
I often work with methods that have been used for centuries, valuing the discipline, patience and technical knowledge that underpins durable and well craftted mosaic work. When contemporary techniques are needed, I also have them at my disposal.
Each piece within a mosaic is shaped and placed with careful consideration of line, rhythm and surface. When I work, I draw on classical principles of composition and andamento – the directional flow that gives mosaic its movement and voice.
The process is inherently slow and deliberate, something I embrace in a fast-paced world. The repetitive acts of cutting and placing tesserae result in subtle variation allowing expression to emerge as the work develops.
The richness of imperfection
The craft of mosaic has a richness which comes from imperfection – irregular lines, visible breaks. the evidence of the maker’s hand. These qualities are not concealed but celebrated, meaning each work is entirelydifferent and can never be repeated or replicated.
Through my work I aim to honour the long history of mosaic as a skilled craft. I seek to maintain traditional techniques while applying them to contemporary contexts. Each mosaic is a testament to my classical training and a commitment to craftsmanship that values longevity, precision and quiet complexity.
Custom made mosaics
I run my mosaic practice from Out of the Blue Abbeymount Studios in Edinburgh where I mainly use Winckelmans unglazed porcelain and vitreous glass tiles. I custom make my mosaics, each one responding to the client’s brief and the place where it will be installed. When not working to commission, I experiment with found and foraged materials including stone, single use plastics and hardware.
I teach weekend workshops at Abbeymount Studios and other UK venues.
