Weekly class

Weekly evening class from January 15 to Wednesday, March 4, 2020.

Wednesdays, 6pm – 9pm.

Out of the Blue Abbeymount, 2 Easter Road, Edinburgh EH7 5AN

Learn new mosaic skills and refine your existing ones with this eight-week course which will give you the flexibility and skills to create a range of indoor and outdoor mosaic projects from plaques to pots, mirrors to mandalas. What to expect: These mosaic classes are aimed at people with no experience of mosaic making as well as those who want to expand their skills. New participants will start by learning cutting, laying and sticking techniques before making their own mosaic using the direct method on a 25cm x 25cm wooden board.  Students will be using ceramic and vitreous glass tiles with the option of either following their own designs or working with pre-prepared patterns and by the end of the course they will have all the skills needed for further projects including fixing and grouting.

Mosaic improvers will begin by learning about the range of different methods and their applications before deciding on their own project. The possibilities are endless – a mosaic table top, an outdoor urn, a mirror frame or just a more ambitious mosaic design on board. Individual guidance and help will be offered as well as all the tools and materials needed to complete your project.

Both beginners and improvers who complete their main project will have the opportunity to explore a different technique in the final two classes. The options include experimenting with the tile adhesive method using found and recycled objects such as shells, pebbles and broken pottery or using the indirect method to make a paving stone.

No previous experience necessary. Maximum class size: 6.

Cost: £220.

What’s included: Tools and equipment, a wide selection of materials from ceramic and vitreous glass to found objects, bases, adhesives, course notes and teas/coffees/biscuits.

Weekend Mosaic Immersion Workshop

Saturday – Sunday, April 25 and 26, 2020.

10:30am to 5pm on both days.

Out of the Blue Abbeymount, 2 Easter Road, Edinburgh EH7 5AN

What to expect: This is an extended version of the Introduction to Mosaics Workshop (see above). The idea is to have more time to explore and experiment with the techniques and possibilities of mosaics and to try out alternative approaches to mosaic making. No previous experience is necessary for this workshop which will cover everything from the principles of the ancient art of mosaics to mosaic materials, tools, methods, adhesives and grouts.

We will start with an overview of basic cutting and laying techniques and then you will prepare your substrate before working on your own 20cm square mosaic plaque. For this part of the workshop we will be using vitreous glass and Winkelman’s unglazed ceramic tiles and you will follow your own design or choose from a selection of pre-prepared templates.

On Day Two you will complete your mosaic and learn bow to grout and finish your piece. You will then make a second piece using found and/or recycled materials such as pebbles, broken crockery or shells. This involves a different technique and you might choose to decorate a ceramic pot or to work on a second plaque. The choice is yours!

The intention is to gain a solid understanding of how to make mosaics and to leave with sufficient knowledge to enjoy this immensely therapeutic and satisfying art form at home.

No previous experience necessary. Maximum class size: 6.

Cost: £160

What’s included: Tools and equipment, a wide selection of materials from ceramic and vitreous glass to found objects, bases, adhesives, course notes and teas/coffees/biscuits.
