Discover the timeless art of mosaics in this four-day mosaic retreat designed for participants of all skill levels.
This workshop will guide you through the fundamentals of traditional and contemporary mosaic-making. It is fully accessible to beginners as well as those with mosaic experience.
Over the course of four days, you will learn the classical secrets of laying your mosaic tiles to create harmonious work. You will also get familiar with mosaic tools and materials as well as how to prepare your base, cut, shape and lay your tiles. In addition, you will learn how to grout and finish your completed mosaic.
Traditional mosaic making is famously slow. However, it is a useful skill which can be applied to a variety of different approaches to mosaics. In this unusual workshop you will have the chance to discover the fundamental rules of mosaics while also trying a different technique working with found and recycled materials. This is a freer more intuitive approach to mosaics giving you a flavour of two different styles.
By the end of this mosaic retreat, you will have at least one beautiful, handmade mosaic to take home, along with a deeper appreciation for this ancient art form.
Mosaic is an immersive medium renowned for its slow, meditative qualities. Helen has more than twenty years of experience of working with mosaics and is known for bringing together students of diverse abilities, inspiring enthusiasm in the process and pride in the results.
All materials are provided, and no prior experience is required.
Timetable
Sunday afternoon to Friday morning
Five nights, four full teaching days, all inclusive.
Course teaching: 10am – 4pm including coffee/tea break
Lunch break: 1pm – 2pm
Teaching finishes: 4pm
Outside hours: students may have access to the studio at all times with permission from the tutor.
Course Materials
- All baseboards, glues and grout and materials are supplied
- If desired, please bring along your own found and recycled objects to include in your second piece. Possible items include: pebbles, shells, broken plates, old jewelry, single use plastics etc.
Additional information
Please wear appropriate clothing/aprons for the workshop or studio. This includes stout covered footwear, i.e. no open-toes or sandals.
