Day One: We will start with an overview of basic cutting and laying techniques and then you will prepare your substrate before working on your own 20cm square mosaic plaque. For this part of the workshop we will be using vitreous glass and Winkelman’s unglazed ceramic tiles and you will follow your own design or choose from a selection of pre-prepared templates.
On Day Two you will complete your mosaic and learn bow to grout and finish your piece. You will then make a second piece using found and/or recycled materials such as pebbles, broken crockery or shells. This involves a different technique and you might choose to decorate a ceramic pot or to work on a second plaque. The choice is yours!
The intention is to gain a solid understanding of how to make mosaics and to leave with sufficient knowledge to enjoy this immensely therapeutic and satisfying art form at home.
What’s included: Tools and equipment, a wide selection of materials from ceramic and vitreous glass to found objects, bases, adhesives, course notes and teas/coffees/biscuits.
What to bring: An apron or big shirt, design ideas, materials such as sea glass, broken pottery and interesting pebbles if you prefer to use your own, a shallow box to take your work home and a packed lunch. Alternatively, there are a range of good cafes very close by with sandwiches and salad options.
